Maya wrote this statement about her family's experience during Martell's illness. It perfectly sums up not only the values and determination of the Bland family, but also what the Bland Program, the Exon 20 Group, and ICAN are all about:

My dad was diagnosed with a very rare lung cancer mutation called EGFR Exon 20. This is a mutation found primarily in patients who have never smoked and who are in great physical condition with very active lifestyles.

When my dad was diagnosed in the hospital, the doctor came in, was very dismissive, and didn't give my dad any hope--saying he can't fight or do anything to help the situation. If anyone ever discourages you, dismisses you, or tells you there's no hope for your situation, please don't accept defeat or believe you can't. My parents sure didn't accept defeat. They quickly found the Exon 20 Group through a fellow Christian, and that began their journey to battle against cancer.

My dad and mom quickly became self-empowered, and educated themselves while they worked closely with the Exon 20 Group at ICAN. My parents became experts in what clinical trials were available to my dad, and how he might get compassionate use of one of the promising drugs for Exon 20.

While my dad did eventually pass from cancer, my parents and family had a "no regrets" journey, no "would've, could've, should've" doubts about their efforts. They had great medical teams and ICAN helping them throughout their journey. The moral of the story is: Never let anyone tell you, "You can't" and if a doctor or anyone else tells you something is hopeless, never let that stop you from advocating for yourself. Always remember that you can. What helps me when I feel discouraged is the Bible verse Philippians 4:13 that says, "I CAN do all things through Christ who gives me strength." Surround yourself with people who will help you conquer and overcome your battles.

I want to encourage you to always remember that YOU CAN. Together we can live by the motto that I CAN!
