The leadership of ICAN, International Cancer Advocacy Network (www.askican.org), gathered on Monday, April 8, to honor Stephen Rothschild, former President of the Million Dollar Round Table Foundation (http://www.mdrtfoundation.org) for his leadership and support.  The MDRT Foundation has granted ICAN $15,000 to help Stage IV cancer patients throughout the United States and around the world who are fighting rare cancers.

Since 1959, the MDRT Foundation has granted money for projects around the world in healthcare, education, poverty relief, and other worthwhile causes.  The MDRT Foundation is the charitable arm of the Million Dollar Round Table, “the premier association of financial professionals.”

Also in attendance were the leadership and foursome captains of ICAN’s Ninth Annual (2018) Liberty Mutual Invitational golf tournament.  Mr. Rothschild and his wife Debbie are long-standing supporters of that event, and many of their friends and fellow golfers were in attendance.

Mr. Rothschild presented the MDRT Foundation check to ICAN at the lovely home of Cathy and Fred Dalzell in Paradise Valley, Arizona.  He said, “I have seen the outstanding work done by Marcia Horn and ICAN to help cancer patients—especially those who have seemingly run out of options.  They turn no one away.  They find clinical trials or other promising treatments for patients who need help and were not getting it.  Each year, the ICAN-Liberty Mutual Golf Tournament, which I contribute to and play in, features one or more grateful patients who have literally been brought back from the brink of death due to the help they have received from ICAN.”

Wendy Look and Cathy Dalzell, members of ICAN’s Leadership Council and Tournament Chairs for the Liberty Mutual Invitational, praised the MDRT Foundation gift and Stephen Rothschild’s support on behalf of ICAN.  Said Wendy, “Steve, your leadership in securing this gift to ICAN will have a real impact on the lives of patients fighting rare cancers throughout the country.  We are so indebted to you for having supported ICAN’s funding request to the MDRT Foundation.  You are a model of volunteer leadership.”

Tournament Chair and host Cathy Dalzell, in receiving the check from MDRT, thanked the Rothschilds for their strong support of ICAN special events and for introducing the ICAN family to the MDRT Foundation.  “It’s with supporters and leaders such as Stephen Rothschild, who has so distinguished himself in the business world, that ICAN will be able to get to the next level of success.”

Sherry Weinstein, Chairman of ICAN’s Board of Trustees said, “We are thrilled to receive such a large grant from the MDRT Foundation, and it will be wisely used on our project dealing with patient-reported outcomes.  Steve Rothschild has been a loyal supporter of ICAN since the inception of our Liberty Mutual events where we first came to know him and his lovely wife Debbie.  We are honored that Steve’s long-time friends and frequent golfing partners, Josefine and David Perry, Marlene and Gene Shapiro, and Len Landsbaum, were also in attendance to honor him and the MDRT Foundation grant.”

Marcia Horn, ICAN’s CEO, praised the Rothschilds for their support securing this tremendous gift to the organization, and thanked the guests at the Dalzell home for their early commitments to support ICAN’s next major event, the 10th Annual Liberty Mutual Insurance Golf Invitational.  The Invitational will be held on Thursday, November 21st, 2019, returning to Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale.  “Based on tonight’s event we are thrilled to report that we have already secured half of the foursomes we need for our 2019 event, thanks to the leadership of our Tournament Chairs Wendy Look, Cathy Dalzell, and Michael Friedman.”

“In all the years of our golf events,” added ICAN Chairman Sherry Weinstein, “ICAN has never received foursome commitments so quickly, and we salute Wendy, Cathy, and Mike for getting us to this position.”  Sherry encouraged everyone to support “this one-of-a-kind organization.”
